Energy storage is still largely dependent on fossil fuel-powered electricity. The high demand and uncertainty of the renewable energy supply puts a strain on the power grid. In order to reduce this strain, storing excess renewable energy during low-demand hours is critical. Bloomberg New Energy Finance expects annual expenditures in this sector to nearly quadruple over the next decade, from $8.6 billion in 2020 to $30.1 billion in 2030.
