Farmers have traditionally made their money by producing food. But the growing awareness of the relationship between healthy ecosystems and healthy foods is leading some to consider other forms of compensation. Farmers may be paid to control water flow or sequester carbon dioxide on their property, for example. As part of their Nutrients for All campaign, Ashoka Changemakers explores some of these emerging compensation approaches.

On World Water Day : A sustainable water solution for coffee processing in Ethiopia
TechnoServe is working with wet mill operators along the Kolla River to implement a low-cost, sustainable approach to water treatment – vetiver grass wetlands. The vetiver grass’s deep roots suck up the water, slowing down flow and infiltration into the soil. The remaining effluent, if any, is stored in a small pond at the bottom of the wetland to evaporate.
