All entrepreneurs are inherently risk-takers, but some are willing to go above and beyond for an idea they believe in. NYU Stern alumnus Samir Ibrahim and serial entrepreneur Charles Nichols, winners of the Audience Choice Award at the 2011-12 Entrepreneur’s Challenge fit this description perfectly. The two recently packed their bags and moved to Kenya, where their start-up SunCulture sells solar-powered irrigation products and agricultural services to local farmers.

UN FAO calls for sustained investment in global agriculture
Excessive corruption, poor infrastructure and scarce government resources were deterring investment in agriculture and contributing to high levels of malnourishment around the world, said an FAO report released Thursday.

And based on what I’ve read this week, it’s hard not to see it any other way. Private equity firm Bamboo Finance will take a controlling stake in Accion’s for-profit equity fund, which for nearly 10 years has provided capital to microfinance institutions.

LINKing Smallholders : A guide on inclusive business models
The Linking Farmers to Markets programme is one of the six thematic areas of the Decision and Policy Analysis (DAPA) research programme at the International Center of Tropical Agriculture’s (CIAT). Since 2007 it has conducted action research on inclusive business models, which has been distilled in a participatory guide to Business Models that link smallholders to markets. The LINK Methodology aims to foster inclusive trading relationships between farmer organisations and formal markets.
