The mission of the Green Climate Fund is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their people.

Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies. It is country-driven and undertakes actions that reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Since its establishment, the GCF has approved 177 projects in 123 countries and has committed USD 8.9 billion in climate finance. In addition, it has built up an extensive program to support developing countries to identify their needs, in particular, those who are most vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Position Objective

The Project Officer in the Division of Mitigation and Adaptation will be responsible for undertaking a range of analytical and operational responsibilities necessary for: 1) project and programme pipeline origination and development, 2) project and programme review, board approval and post-Board approval processes, and 3) other responsibilities related with the core business of the division.

Duties and responsibilities


Provide analysis in support of pipeline origination and development, and technical review of project/ programme funding proposals, concept notes, and readiness proposals, including NAPs;
Apply the Fund’s investment criteria and other policies in the review of funding proposals, concept notes and readiness proposals;
Research the portfolio and pipeline of projects submitted to the Fund to support the drafting of relevant papers, reports and other documents; and
Conduct research work on sectoral/technical topics related to GCF’s core business.


Engage with internal stakeholders, country representatives, accredited entities and other external parties on funding proposals, sectoral guidance and other topics;
Provide organizational and substantive support in Board meetings and other meetings and events.

Support the engagement across the project cycle, and as assigned, assume the role of Technical Reviewer and lead the project cycle in the case of Simplified Approval Process proposals;
Lead on the analytical and procedural stages of processing concept notes and funding proposals, including maintenance of the project database, across relevant stages of the GCF project cycle; and
Support corporate, divisional and team initiatives and activities, as assigned.

Required experience and qualifications*

Master’s degree in climate science, climate policy, energy, energy policy, energy economics, resource economics, finance, environmental sciences, renewable energy, law, sustainable development, or related fields;
At least four (4) years of relevant work experience;
Experience in a relevant sector and/or experience in climate finance or developing climate finance projects in international / developing countries settings is highly desirable;
Experience in project management including but not limited to design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation is highly desirable;
Relevant experience in climate finance and international setting;
Excellent business writing and presentation skills; and
Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of another United Nations language is an advantage.
