‘Nation’s economic situation influences health of people’

VARANASI: Academique, an inter-disciplinary group in the DST Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) held a discussion on ’Social determinants of health’ in the 275th session on Sunday.

Taking part in the discussion, CP Mishra, head, department of community medicine, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, said that promotion and protection of health of people is essential for sustained economic and social development and contribute to a better quality of life. Socio-economic situation of a country has definite influence on the health of its population. Health status is primarily determined by the level of socio-economic development such as the GNP, education, nutrition, employment and housing because lower socio-economic status leads to higher prevalence of diseases.
