AVPN South Asia Summit 2023
The South Asia region faces insurmountable challenges in building a strong, resilient and just recovery path from the effects of the pandemic, according to recent World Bank reports. The fragmented and highly volatile geopolitical situations across Pakistan and Sri Lanka has rendered the region susceptible to economic shocks and socio-cultural development stunting.
The World Bank further reports that the growth in the region, already sluggish, will be slower at an estimated 6.6 percent in 2022 and by 6.3 percent in 2023. The effects of the war on Ukraine, uneven economic and social performance across key countries, and rising fuel and commodity costs are expected to further exacerbate the slow growth, with climate change rendering the region extremely vulnerable to sudden shocks.
Issues such as gender equality, livelihood opportunities for youth, climate action and just energy transition, health equity and preparedness, and ecosystem development continue to hinder the region’s growth. Even with high levels of social sector and private sector involvement in championing these causes across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan, the lack of political will and effective advocacy measures result in siloed growth and ineffective linkages between social and economic development. The region is nowhere close to meeting the SDG targets by 2030. There is an urgent need to delve deep into issues that prevent target achievement and course-correct in the immediate future.
With India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, it is vital to examine the country’s influence over the region and unpack the role of the private and social sectors in contributing to not just India’s development narrative but also fueling the growth narrative of the South Asia region as a whole. With the government in India opening up to strategic private sector partnerships towards longer-term and at-scale development initiatives, this presents an opportunity for networks like AVPN to bring regional perspectives and lessons to bolster the region’s growth.
Through the 2-day South Asia Summit on 19 and 20 January 2023, AVPN hopes to bring together its 100+ members in the region, as well as invite members from across AVPN’s global member network to participate in discourses and dialogues that look to set forward the path for a cohesive development agenda for the South Asia region.
Over the 2 days, participants will engage in breakout sessions, plenaries, curated lunches, and networking sessions to spotlight effective public-private sector partnerships in the identified issue domains which could amplify and strengthen existing work. Newer, larger, and at-scale opportunities will be identified to drive a cohesive social development narrative for South Asia. Best practices, case studies, and implementation pathways from across the APAC region will also be highlighted.
