Data Talks – Advancing Agenda 2063: Empowering Africa’s Future through Youth, Data, and Innovation
The year 2024 was pivotal for Digital Transformation and AI development in Africa with the adoption of two landmark frameworks of the African Union (AU): the African Digital Compact (ADC) and the Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy (CAIS). These frameworks are integral to the AU’s vision of the Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. The ADC and CAIS underscore the growing recognition of data, innovation, and AI as important contributors in achieving inclusive and sustainable development as envisioned with Agenda 2063. Additionally, the “1 Million Next Level (1mNL)” aims to empower 300 million youth with opportunities in health, education, employment, entrepreneurship, and engagement. However, significant gaps in data innovation capacity remain, particularly among AU professionals and AU member states, compounded by a shortage of innovative tools.
Africa’s tech-savvy youth present an unparalleled opportunity to accelerate the continent’s development. Home to the world’s youngest population – projected to make up 42% of global youth by 2030 – Africa’s youth can become both contributors to and beneficiaries of data innovation.
By harnessing its demographic dividend, the AU can not only achieve its Agenda 2063 but also redefine its role on the global stage, empowering young people to become active agents of change.
