Widely regarded as one of the most successful examples of U.S. global health leadership, it claims to have saved 25 million lives and until recently enjoyed bipartisan support. But now PEPFAR finds itself caught up in America’s culture wars, battling vague allegations that it funds abortion, and its reauthorization by the U.S. Congress has been thrown into doubt.
