Healthpoint Services India Pvt. Ltd. had a busy Tuesday: Winning the Sankalp Award for Innovative Enterprises, and announcing the closure of a new investment.

Healthpoint Services, which was co-founded byAshoka Senior Entrepreneur Al Hammond and supported by Ashoka (a NextBillion Associate Partner), won the award for Emerging Ventures in the health/water/sanitation sector for 2011. The company was honored specifically for its model to create rural clinics that provide both primary health care and safe drinking water at low rates. The company also has advanced telemedicine – or remote health services such as doctor consultation and diagnostic treatment – to remote, rual patients. Healthpoint says it has provided 22,000 medical consultations while serving more than 50,000 people daily with drinking water, while adding local jobs.

“We are extremely gratified and humbled by the Sankalp Award.
“(The Sankalp award) certifies that we are making significant progress toward our goal of transforming rural healthcare in India and elsewhere,” sad Amit Jain, president and CEO of HealthPoint Services India.

The performance has caught the eye of at least one strategic investor. Healthpoint also announced it has closed an investment from strategic partner Fontus Water Ltd., part of the EarthWater Group, to assist in its growth plans. Earthwater provides water treatment technology in India.

“We plan to build our EHP (e-health point) units across India, so we still have much to do. But we are encouraged that this effort is beginning to attract both recognition and investment support in India and globally,” said Hammond, who serves as executive chairman of Health Point Services. He added that the company has received a good deal more attention since these announcements.
