It’s a warm, yet breezy evening in Granada, Nicaragua. From Parque Central, a central reference point for most visitors, the soft backdrop of music and laughter can be heard dripping from the patios. Throughout the globe today, communities will be celebrating World Water Day. Remembering my first trek to the dirt football pitch in the Mathare slum several months ago, I realize now that perhaps nowhere else is this year’s message of "water quality" more relevant than in the slums of Nairobi.

In early March, I attended the iBoP Asia conference FRONTIERS: Charting the Future of S&T Innovations for the Base of the Pyramid in Southeast Asia.
