Mission and History of Root Capital
Root Capital’s mission is to grow rural prosperity by investing in small and growing agricultural businesses that build sustainable livelihoods in Africa and Latin America.
Root Capital is a nonprofit social investment fund that grows rural prosperity in poor, environmentally vulnerable places in Africa and Latin America by lending capital, delivering financial training and strengthening market connections for small and growing agricultural businesses.
Root Capital clients include associations and private businesses that help create sustainable livelihoods by aggregating the products of hundreds, and often, thousands of farmers. Since our launch in 1999, we have provided more than $400 million in credit to over 460 small and growing agricultural businesses.
Root Capital envision a thriving financial market serving agricultural businesses that generate long-term social, economic, and environmental sustainability for small-scale farmers and their communities around the world. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Root Capital currently has associated offices in Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Kenya.
1. Provide administrative support to the SVP Finance & Operations (10%)
Ø Schedule regular department meetings and coordinate meeting logistics.
Ø Assist SVP in managing department budget by entering budget data into budgeting software and reviewing monthly budget to actual reports.
Ø Assist with filing expense reports as needed.
2. Provide administrative and logistical support for F&O staff needs and Root Capital Board of Directors (BOD) meetings. (15%)
Ø Research travel options, including flights, hotels, and transportation, and assist with planning for trips to the field or to conferences / professional development events for F&O staff.
Ø Assist with planning and travel logistics for Root Capital quarterly BOD meetings and BOD committee meetings as needed.
Ø Support preparation of BOD Book and BOD schedule as needed for quarterly meetings.
Ø Update and maintain hard copy and electronic files of BOD minutes, votes, and documentation related to Board conversations. Update relevant databases.
Ø Assist with special F&O projects and tasks as assigned.
3. Serve as IT liaison and project coordinator between Cambridge and field offices (30%)
Ø Track and manage field office IT needs and issues through bi-weekly communications with field office administrators and IT contractors. Communicate issues and status to field staff and Cambridge IT leadership as needed.
Ø Provide best practice guidance, facilitation, and training for field staff and assist with troubleshooting efforts for: video conferencing systems (Skype, WebEx, and others), Google Apps, Box.com, and Salesforce.com.
Ø Document field office telecom, ISP, and IT equipment vendors, contracts, quality of service, and issues. Assist with field telecom and IT vendor procurement.
Ø Provide translation (Spanish to/from English) for IT related documentation, emails, and intranet training materials.
4. Provide administrative support for Root Capital’s legal and compliance function. (40%)
Ø Support planning and set-up for Root Capital’s quarterly Code of Ethics (COE) workshops and assist in monitoring compliance with COE.
Ø Support development and tracking of contractor agreements. Update and maintain contractor agreement database.
Ø Update and maintain Root Capital’s covenants database, which tracks covenants with Root Capital’s donors and investors, as new upstream funding is closed by Investor Relations.
Ø Support application processes for universal registration for philanthropic solicitations and Blue Sky filings.
Ø Support development and formalization of legal documents required for Power of Attorney assignments for loan closings / collections.
Ø Assist in updating and maintaining Legal Resources page of Root Capital intranet.
Ø Support development of materials for annual “Thank You Road Show” for pro bono legal partners.
5. Provide administrative support for field office registrations and set-up. (5%)
Ø Compile and submit relevant documents to local counsel to facilitate registration process for new field offices.
Ø Prepare and send translation requests for legal documents and memos related to field office registrations / governance / tax research.
Ø Plan and prepare for monthly coordination meetings between Root Capital’s HR, accounting, legal, and IT teams in Cambridge and Root’s newly established field offices.

Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree. 2-3 years experience in an administrative or project coordination role.
Spanish language proficiency required.
“Superuser” of cloud-based IT systems, especially Google, Salesforce.com, Box.com, and video conferencing systems (such as WebEx, Skype, etc.). Prior experience training others on these systems a plus.
Strong customer service orientation. Detail-oriented, organized, and process-oriented.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Able to problem solve and to make strategic recommendations regarding potential solutions.
Able to work with minimal supervision. Proactive, take-charge attitude.
Able to work in a fast-paced environment and under tight deadlines.
Collaborative team player with a good sense of humor.
Passion for Root Capital’s commitment to worldwide poverty alleviation and environmental conservation.
Must be authorized to work in the US.
