As we move from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the transition process is filled with a mix of excitement, expectation and guarded optimism. Perhaps some of the early hesitation voiced by various stakeholders, in both the public and private sector, trying integrate the SGDs will come to pass. However, the flourishing ecosystem of large companies diligently working in corporate social responsibility, shared value and in the inclusive business arena is encouraging.

MTN most admired brand in Africa’s top 10 list, while Nigerian firms can’t stop winning
MTN emerged Africa’s most admired brand for the second year in a row, according the fourth annual Brand Africa 100 rankings announced Thursday in Johannesburg. It’s the second year in a row that the South African telco is topping the rankings.

GSBI Social Entrepreneurs Get Funded
In September, the Global Social Benefit Institute’s (GSBI®) partner Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves announced the winners of its grants to spark business growth and empower women. Nearly US$2 million in grants were awarded to entrepreneurs working to create a global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions, saving millions of lives, creating livelihoods, and restoring human dignity. This year the Alliance awarded 16 grantees from a diverse range of initiatives falling under three main funding mechanisms: the Women’s Empowerment Fund, Spark Fund, and the Catalytic Small Grants Program. The focus of all of the grants is to empower women and help small businesses scale their operations.

Sisu Global Heath wins $100,000 investment from AOL co-founder Steve Case
A Baltimore startup that developed a surgical tool to recycle the blood of a patient suffering from internal bleeding landed a $100,000 investment Monday from AOL co-founder Steve Case, winning a "live pitch" competition among eight Baltimore companies.

A Johns Hopkins team designed an Ebola suit so good, it’s going on the market
Youseph Yazdi was surprised by the number of people who jumped in to help design better protective gear for people helping Ebola victims – everyone from freshmen to robotics experts to a wedding-dress maker. But he was even more surprised when the solutions the team came up with at the hackathon at Johns Hopkins University attracted the notice of leading producers of protective clothing. A version of the suit they designed will be manufactured by DuPont and available early next year, the university announced Monday.
